چکیده
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that attacks myelinated axons in the central nervous system (CNS), destroying the myelin and the axon in variable degrees. The disease is characterized initially by episodes of reversible neurologic deficits. In most patients, these episodes are followed by progressive neurologic deterioration over time. The cause of the disease is not known, but it likely involves a combination of genetic susceptibility and a nongenetic trigger, such as a virus, low vitamin D levels, or environmental factors, that together result in a self-sustaining MS is an inflammatory, demyelinating disease of the CNS.1,2

Stem Cells in Neurological Diseases: Indian Perspective
Stem cell therapy is under investigation in neurological diseases with currently sub optimal or no treatment available. They are hypothesized to produce new cells, or act as “chaperones or scaffolds” to repair and reconstruct neuronal circuitry and release the relevant neurotransmitters for ultimate functional improvement in the individual. They have the potential either to divide or multiply o...
متن کاملMultiple sclerosis in childhood: presenting as bilateral optic neuritis.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease of adolescence and middle age. Though rare, it is being increasingly recognized in younger population. We describe two patients in whom multiple sclerosis was diagnosed before 10 years of age. Both patients had bilateral optic neuritis during the course of their illness with partial recovery; other lesions in the neuraxis recovered reasonably well.
متن کاملMotor neuron disease and multiple sclerosis among immigrants to England from the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, and east and west Africa.
The mortality from motor neuron disease (MND) and multiple sclerosis (MS) was studied among immigrants to England and Wales from the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, and East and West Africa during the 10 years 1979-88. The MND mortality among ethnic Asian males was only half and for females one fifth of that expected at English rates. MND mortality in Caribbean immigrants was somewhat lower...
متن کاملMultiple sclerosis in Coloured South Africans.
Detailed case histories of seven Coloured South Africans with multiple sclerosis are presented; the summary of one South African-born Indian is included. Apart from an isolated case report in 1947, this is the first time that multiple sclerosis has been reported in detail in this South African racial group. All the Coloured patients presented for the first time during the last 12 years.
متن کاملWeighing Evidence from Mendelian Randomization—Early-Life Obesity as a Causal Factor in Multiple Sclerosis?
In this Perspective, Alberto Ascherio and Kassandra Munger discuss the implications of Richards and colleagues' study exploring the role of early-life obesity in risk of multiple sclerosis.
